If someone you love got recently diagnosed with ASD or autism spectrum disorder, you would want to further educate yourself about the disorder and how it could be treated. Currently, patients with ASD are being treated and managed by several conventional treatment.

Regardless of the patient’s age and when they were diagnosed to have the condition, many of them benefit from treatment. People of all ages with ASD frequently get better because of carefully planned interventions. To further give people with ASD the best opportunity to live a normal life and fully employ their skills and abilities, they should receive the right therapies and interventions to reduce their symptoms.

Early intervention

“Prevention is better than cure”. This is a statement that could not have been truer when it comes to ASD. According to research, to have a favourable long-term impact on symptoms and developing skills, early identification and treatment of autism is the key. What age could be considered as early intervention? It could start as early as 2 or 3 or before a child goes to preschool.

Early intervention is crucial since the child’s brain at this age is still maturing and more adaptable, making them malleable to treatment. Specialists at the Brain Train believe that patients with ASD have a better chance of learning if they received assistance at an early age. They could even be considered no longer on the autism spectrum as they get older.

Social skills training

SST or social skills training is one of the innovative and fun modern-day therapy for ASD. This type of therapy will teach ASD patient with the right actions for a range of settings and assist them in understanding how to interact with other people.

Various methods are used for SST such as visual aids (how to correctly socially interact is depicted in comic strips that are more engaging and easier to understand), role playing (for easier learning about appropriate conduct and social interaction), video modelling (patients watch videos of a social encounter and taught how to respond). These methods have been proven effective since they are engaging and enjoyable.

Speech language therapy

Another type of therapy that is interesting and could retain the attention of an ASD patient is speech language therapy which encompasses of treatment for verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Verbal communication therapy includes better use of words and sentences with enhanced speech rhythm and pace and improved explanations of sentiments and emotions. As for non-verbal communication therapy, the use of sign language or hand motions and images (Picture Exchange Communication System) are utilized.

It might take time to find the set of interventions and therapy that works best. It is recommended that the patient’s family and love ones cooperate and work hand in hand with their medical provider to find which structured and targeted program will work well for the ASD patient. Based on numerous studies, early diagnosis and therapies is recommended. So, it is better to learn more about early autism interventions.
