Does Your Child Care For Their Teeth Properly

The incidence of dental problems in children varies, but the first tooth usually appears within 6 to 10 months.  Some babies have teeth even at 3 months.  In other cases, they appear only after 12 months. Milk teeth can appear in different orders, although the mid lower teeth are frequently the first to be seen.  All 20 deciduous teeth will be developed within first 3 years. Thirty-two adult teeth replace milk teeth from 6 to 20 years.

Oral hygiene should begin when your baby is a toddler.  Start using a babysized soft toothbrush when you are about 1 or 2 years old.  You should at least brush your toddlers teeth twice a day with water.  You can also use fluoridefree toothpaste.  This toothpaste is safe for babies.  When your baby is old enough to spit toothpaste, you can switch to fluoride toothpaste.  Use only little.  Teach your child to apply it between the teeth, gums, and tongue.  Let your toddler learn the right way of brushing from the dentist. You can try the following procedures while brushing your teeth.

Stand or sit behind the baby to make the baby feel safe.  Brushing your teeth in front of a mirror is also important because it allows you to see your baby’s mouth.

Rub the child’s chin with your hands and place his head on your body

Brush the  gums with a toothbrush.  Move the brush in slow circular motions to clean your teeth and gums inside and out.

Brush back and forth while chewing.

Gently wipe your baby’s tongue.

If you use an electric toothbrush, avoid brushing in the usual manner.  Hold your hand and move the brush over your baby’s teeth and gums.

Toddlers usually don’t like brushing their teeth.  But even a quick clean is better than nothing because brushing your teeth will help you see if your routine is going well.

When kids are happy, they brush their teeth more often.  Here are some ideas:

Help children choose a toothbrush.  They can select their favorite color or type.

Ask the children to help you choose toothpaste.  They can select the flavorthey want.

Read a book on dental hygiene or watch a video.

Use a timer to make sure your child brushes for 2 minutes.  Or play their favorite song, so you can come back when it finishes.

Reward your child for good oral care.  Do not give them candy and sweets.  Instead, divert their thinking to good things in life, such as an apple or a gold star.

Plan a fun activity after your child goes to the Mount Druitt dental clinic.

Encourage your child to brush their teeth before leaving home.  When the child learns to spit they can start using the toothpaste.

Even though they might not eat the same food more than once a week, the dentist actually says that most children’s teeth are perfectly healthy which shows how necessary it really is to go to the dentist twice a year.
