Design Your Dream House with Style and Functionality

Designing a house is no easy task. Sometimes you will want certain features incorporated but will have no idea how to do it. You will also have to take into consideration the needs of everyone in your family. So, if you are someone who is looking for ways to plan a home, take a look at the following tips.

Make Your Sketches

Whether you are planning to do the entire design by yourself with the help of a software, or you are planning to hire residential architects to finalise the plans for you, it is necessary to sketch your idea into paper. Get some papers and a pencil, get together with your partner/ family, and start brainstorming. What is the overall structure you like to see, any specific feature you want to emphasise or how you want the interior or the exterior look – are some of the basic features that needs to be on your sketches.

Choose Your Style

What kind of architectural style you like the most? There are many architectural styles when it comes to house planning. From old Victorian styles to modern contemporary houses with minimalist décor, bohemian style with a touch of colours, retro features, are some of the design styles that you can look into. If you don’t want to stick to one theme or style, or if your partner likes a different style and you want to compromise, then there is always the option of mixing styles. You can either do this yourself or hire a professional designer to help you out with mixed housing styles.

Customise

A house is not just some building with rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and living room. In order for a house to be a home, it needs to be customised for your needs. To do this, you need to consider about your current residential needs as a family as well as your future needs. Do you have kids? Are you planning to have kids or do you have grown children who will be leaving home soon? Will your elderly parents be living with you? If these are applicable to you, it means you need to think of accommodation for all of them. Think of how many rooms and/ or nurseries you will need.

Your Location Matters

It is not just the interior design aspect that you have to think of. When designing a house, you will also have to think of the size of your land area, the direction each room needs to face, and how you want the exterior of the house to be seen from outside. Depending on the size of your land, the dimensions of your house change.

This will also define whether the house will be one storeyed or multi-storeyed. When it comes to rooms and directions, specify the directions you want them to face. Do you want the living room to face the front or do you want to take a non-conventional way and make a bedroom face the front? Mention these specifically in your design plans so your architect, designers and construction team will know exactly what to do.

Function

Even with our personal choices and preferences, sometimes we have to give into the functionality first. For example, if there are elderly people in the house or those with disabilities, they might find it hard to move across stairs. You will either have to give up stairs and multiple floors or you will have to locate one or two bedroom and a bathroom in the first floor.

Rooms such as the kitchen and the dining room always need to be located near each other. Bedrooms are better located away from communal areas. If you have more doubts regarding the location of your rooms, you can always get the help of an architect.

While you might have fairy-tale ideas about your dream house, it is also necessary to think of these functional and practical things when putting your plan into motion.
