Having just launched a business in social media marketing I often get asked variants on the same question….
What’s the secret to succeeding in social?
What’s the magic button/secret sauce that will seamlessly and effortlessly allow me to cut through and succeed, producing viral posts by the truckload?
There is of course no silver bullet or quick and easy answer. Like anything in business, effort, graft and determination matter as does being a subject matter expert.
But two words get you pretty close to the keys…
When you look at the hard yards required to be successful in this space, most things come back to these 2 words.
Sure you need to be a “good mechanic”. You need to understand how the various mediums, platforms and tools work. But this is table stakes. Tactics alone won’t get you there.
Social media is simply a medium or platform allowing humans to connect with each other for a whole range of reasons.
So what traits do you like in humans? Most people are drawn to people (and thus brands) who demonstrate any or all of these:
Whatever platform you are on and for whatever purpose you are using social, if you follow your heart and authentically demonstrate these traits, the rest will take care of itself.
Social doesn’t somehow take us to a parallel universe where the normal rules of human society don’t apply.
So yes by all means learn the tools of your trade. But being yourself and being human is what matters the most.
